John Brady’s Matt Minogue hails from Clare County, Ireland. Thirty years living and working in Dublin, and married to a Dublin woman, Minogue is apparently still credited, by those who know him, and those he happens to meet along the way, with all the ‘odd traits’ of a Clareman.
Now, having never yet been to Ireland, nor knowingly met a ‘Clareman’, I have no bias… but based on these various bits and pieces I’ve noticed and collected from the books in the Matt Minogue series I’ve read so far, the people of Clare County are viewed as rather ‘different’ from your average Dubliner.
Yes, I’ve taken a few liberties, and they’re all out of context, but I figure these random quotes will give you the gist.
Minogue has a mouth on him.
He’s Clare. He came by the sharp tongue honest enough.
Gob now, aren’t you Claremen very cocky now?
Tough enough job for a Clareman… to keep his trap shut.
Clare people are a bit off anyway.
Remember that [he’s] a Clareman with powers of divination and tricks galore.
Clare people [have] indeed cornered the market on intuition.
It’s true, the thing about Clare people. How they’re different. The sixth sense.
Clare people are cracked. Everyone knows that.
